We are so lucky to have a number of incredible jazz musicians across the Central belt of Scotland, and we are delighted to announce that Colin Steele's Kings of Swing will be kicking off the weekend for our Friday night party!
Trumpeter Colin Steele has pulled together a stellar line up of Scotland's top swing jazz musicians who will be focused on bringing you the swingingest dance tunes around from the 30's and 40's. With decades of experience between them, the band has an enormous repertoire and will warmly welcome tune requests, so if you long to lindy hop or are a beast at balboa please let them know and they'll happily oblige!
Colin is joined in the 2 horn front line by Martin Foster (clarinet/saxophone) and together with Campbell Normand (piano), Roy Percy (bass), and Jim Drummond (drums), they'll be serving up the very finest swinging jazz played with panache, vibrancy, and freshness!
Absolutely buzzing to announce our second band for the weekend - Trad Rags Trio. These guys have delighted us with their upbeat style at previous events in Glasgow, so we're thrilled to have them join us for GSX 2024 at the Saturday fast feet brunch.
The Trad Rags Trio are: Simon Toner on double bass, Mike Kearney on piano and vocals and Paddy Darley on trombone.
Three of Scotland's best early jazz specialists come together in this outfit. These musicians have been instrumental in the success of Scottish Jazz Awards Best Jazz Band 2022 - Tenement Jazz Band.
Trad Rags Trio takes the old ragtime rhythm-section sound with piano and double bass, leaving plenty of room for Paddy's Kid Ory stylings in the trombone, from barks to songbird melodies; and Mike's characterful collection of songs.
We're delighted to welcome The Tenement Jazz Band at our Saturday night party! No strangers to the Glasgow swing dancing community, TJB are a much-loved ensemble of amazing musicians who know how to keep that dance floor full! Here's their bio:
Tenement Jazz band are a traditional jazz band formed in early 2018 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Brought together by their shared love of New Orleans music, and comprising musicians from various corners of Edinburgh’s vibrant jazz scene, they are on a journey of exploration back to the roots of the music that they play.
Their aims are to capture the raw energy and excitement of the early jazz recordings, to find and revive lesser-heard songs and cultivate their own interpretations of these, all in order to captivate experienced jazzers, dancing persons, and uninitiated ears alike.
In their brief existence so far they have performed at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow Jazz Festivals, collaborated with various musicians via their own Cellar Session residency, and performed their own hit show on the Edinburgh Fringe telling the story of the ‘Red Hot Roots of Jazz’ from turn of the century New Orleans and beyond.
After a full weekend of dancing you might think you'd be knackered and ready for bed.
Well, if you're daring enough to join us for our Sunday night afterparty, you might find you get a second or third wind when none other than Baby Face and Beltin' Boys take to the stage to make sure the dancing continues for a while longer!
Don't know who we are talking about? Then you are in for a real treat!
Feast your ears on a small sample of the musical delights you can expect to stomp, swivel and shag to below. But don't come crying to us if you can't get enough, just make sure you join us in person for the full frontal assault of one of the best live sets in town!
